The works by Christiane Pooley (*1983 Temuco/Chile) and Anja Buchheister (*1978 Wolfenbüttel) demand a closer look: What appears to be a mimicry of reality might turn out as an illusion after all. Both artists focus on everyday life, landscapes, nature, the human being, and architecture exploring these subjects through painting, photography and sculpture. By doing so, they do not only break viewing patterns, but question perceptions of image, space, and perspective. Reality seems flawed. Anja Buchheister transfers the medium of photography into three-dimensionality by interpreting it by means of sculpture and installation art, partly complemented with drawings. Ranging from self-portraits over architecture to plants: The depicted object, that the artist photographs herself, and the setting in which it becomes newly located, enter into a compelling dialogue with each other. Cuts in the photograph, foldings and unusual arrangements challenge the spatial perspective and playfully make the viewers rethink their position. Even though Anja Buchheister shows fragments of life in a realistic way, she deconstructs its imagery. Similarly, Christiane Pooley creates illusion in her paintings only to break it again. Without preparatory drawings and following an immediate intuition, she composes figurative scenes which almost resemble collages. While the Chilean artist works out details in some parts, others remain more open in terms of color and space or even left empty, thereby revealing the surface of the material. Somewhere between abstraction and figuration, Christiane Pooley’s mysterious and atmospheric works are inspired by art history in multiple ways. Although her paintings are clearly recognizable as “physical objects”, they provide an unreal place of imagination. After studying graphic design, Anja Buchheister began to study sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich which she completed in 2011 as a master student of Stephan Huber. Apart from exhibitions in various German cities, her works have been presented at Lothringer 13_Laden, Kunstarkaden, Akademiegalerie, and Galerie der Künstler. In 2012, Anja Buchheister received a Debutante grant from the Bavarian State offering her a solo show at galerieGEDOKmuc as well as the publication of a catalogue. Christiane Pooley studied Fine Arts in Santiago and later at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. In 2007, she participated in the group show ”The Hamsterwheel“, curated by Franz West, which took place during the 52nd Venice Biennale. Moreover, Christiane Pooley has exhibited her paintings in Santiago de Chile, Paris, and London. This is her first show in Germany. Both artists will be present during the opening reception. |
