Anja Buchheister’s artistic interventions are as unique and diverse as the numerous forms of life that are classified under the Latin term “species”. In her current exhibition at Esther Donatz Gallery the artist mainly explores plant formations in drawings, photographs and sculptural objects. Similar to nature refusing stagnation, she deliberately exposes her works to processes of transformation. Drawing inspiration from her comprehensive archive, she develops selected images further into new directions.
Anja Buchheister not only plays with the object proportions, but creates individual shapes with her pen and brush as much as through cut-outs or foldings. Existing structures enter into a dynamic dialog and build unusual forms that oscillate between realism and abstraction. Classic notions of the image, space and the perspective are questioned. Likewise, particularly with her photo works the artist challenges concepts of three-dimensionality by deconstructing common viewing patterns. Even though Anja Buchheister’s delicate, spider-like or ornamental looking arrangements refer to nature, the traces of human intervention are omnipresent and range from cultivated plants to a small-town fence. Moreover, the installation of some of the works evokes the meticulous display of insect collections.
Anja Buchheister (*1978 in Wolfenbüttel, lives and works in Munich) completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich in 2011 as a master student of Stephan Huber’s. The public has been acquainted with her work through various exhibitions, such as a solo show at galerieGEDOKmuc, related to a Debutante grant from the Bavarian State, and further presentations at lothringer_13_halle, Galerie der Künstler and Kunstarkaden, Munich, Schalterhalle Starnberg as well as Kunstverein Munich and Rosenheim. Recently, Anja Buchheister showed two installations at St. Markus Church, Munich, as part of the artionale. In 2013, she was awarded the “Förderpreis” (Young Arts Award) of the City of Munich.
